When choosing a therapist it is always important to make sure the therapist is in fact registered in the province they practice in. In Ottawa we are so close to Quebec where massage therapy and naturopathy are not registered yet. Several body workers who practice great modalities like Rolfing, Shiatsu, Thai massage, Cranial Sacral therapy, relaxation massage, and many other very effective therapies have gotten certified in Quebec and issue Quebec massage therapy or naturopathic receipts for their services in Ontario. Insurance companies are catching on to this, so make sure to protect yourself so you don’t end up having to pay out of pocket for these services or worse yet get investigated for fraud. If someone tells you the are an RMT in the province of Quebec, that doesn’t mean anything, its a weekend course and its not regulated. They could be amazing and natural gifted however its best to know what you are paying for.

Things to watch for:

  • What are the credential after their names? Any Registered therapist will write their credentials, for instance Marta Hanrahan, RMT.
  • Do they vaguely mention insurance coverage? “Covered by most insurance companies” “Insurance coverage available” No registered therapist would feel the need to advertise this, its implied. Have you ever seen a Dr.s office say “now covered by OHIP”? Probably not.

How to check:

  • Ask your therapist-  Are you a registered (insert name of therapy here) in the province of Ontario? Its a huge offence using a term like registered massage therapist if you are not.
  • Its easy; check here: http://www.cmto.com/find-a-registered-massage-therapist/
  • Ask your insurance company. It will only take a few moments. Several questionable body workers have been reported to insurance companies, call and see if their name might be on this black list.
  • Every profession has an association, not all members join but many do, check to see if their name is listed. Some professional colleges list their members as well. Simple google search can help you find out.
  • Every professional has to have their college’s certificate visible to the public in the primary place of practice. Check the location. If you are in Ottawa and someone has a certificate up from Quebec this should be a huge red flag.

So if a therapist tells you that they can issues you insurance coverage but does not specify what their professional designation is, or where, or in what they are registered in, ask questions and be aware. Therapy can cause harm if not done by a trained professional.
